President, Smith Farms, Ltd.
He/Him · Minot, North Dakota, United States

Nathan Smith Sawyer, ND, grew up near Minot, North Dakota, where farming was central to his early life. His family’s agricultural background extended across more than five generations, giving him a close view of grain production, cattle operations, and land management. From a young age, he learned that lasting business relationships depend on trust, patience, and consistent effort. These lessons helped shape his approach to agriculture, leadership, and future business opportunities. Nathan Michael Smith earned a degree in Agricultural Economics from a university in his home state, which helped strengthen his understanding of farming, markets, and financial planning. His interest in business started early, including a truck resale venture he began while still in high school. By the age of twenty, he was selling refurbished trucks each month and also gaining experience in gravel hauling, farm equipment resale, and residential property investment. Nathan stepped into leadership of the family farming operation in 1999, when it included about 460 leased acres. Through careful planning and steady work, he helped the operation grow over the following decades into more than 30,000 acres of farmland, along with cattle and feed operations. He also supported expansion into Montana through additional land purchases. His leadership remained focused on responsible growth while continuing the values passed down through his family. Nathan Smith Sawyer, ND, managed agricultural growth by combining practical farm experience with financial awareness and risk control. During the early 2000s, retiring farmers in the region created opportunities for additional leases and land purchases. He worked to use those opportunities carefully while preserving relationships with landowners, producers, and local community members. He also used market analysis tools and hedge accounts to help reduce exposure to commodity price changes and shifting economic conditions. Realtor Nathan Smith later entered real estate development after recognizing housing needs connected to regional changes around 2011. He became involved in residential projects that included townhomes, duplexes, and housing intended to serve growing communities. Some projects supported seasonal agricultural workers, while others addressed broader local housing needs. His development work reached several western states and also included mountain-area properties, allowing him to apply his land knowledge in another business area. Nate Smith expanded his development responsibilities in 2024 by becoming a managing partner at a real estate development company. In this role, he focuses on land evaluation, economic trends, financial review, and long-term project planning. His background in agriculture gives him a practical perspective when considering development opportunities. He works with local businesses, financial institutions, and public agencies when needed, while focusing on projects that offer long-term value and meet practical community needs. Nathan Smith Sawyer, ND, also remains active in community and agricultural service outside his business work. He has served on a hospital foundation board, participated in a local chamber of commerce, and supported wheat-grower organizations at the state and national levels. His involvement has also included youth and winter sports groups. Through his continued work in agriculture, development, and community service, he remains focused on building stable businesses and supporting future growth.
