The battle for the fate of the realms commences once again in “Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion’s Revenge”. Brought to life by the animation studio behind many of the greatest DC animated movie hits, “Scorpion’s Revenge” doesn’t cover much new territory for the MK devoted, but is still a cornucopia of hard-hitting, blood-soaked battles between supernatural warriors, no-nonsense military commandos, and overconfident movie stars that lovers of the games won’t want to sit out! Trailer Cast Patrick Seitz voices the titular anti-hero Hanzo Hasashi aka Scorpion, with Darin De Paul voicing NetherRealm’s famed sorcerer Quan Chi. Dave B. Mitchell provides the voice of Earthrealm’s protector and God of Thunder, Lord Raiden, with his chosen warriors Liu Kang, Sonya Blade, and Johnny Cage voiced by Jordan Rodrigues, Jennifer Carpenter, and Joel McHale. Sonya’s senior military officer Jackson “Jax” Briggs is voiced by Ike Amadi, while Steve Blum provides the voice of Scorpion’s sworn enemy, Sub-Zero. Grey Griffin voices both Princess Kitana and Scorpion’s young son Satoshi, with Artt Butler voicing the evil sorcerer Shang Tsung and Kevin Michael Richardson voicing his fearsome four-armed warrior, Goro. Plot Hanzo Hasashi once lived humbly in feudal Japan, rearing his young son Satoshi in the ways of the Shirai Ryu ninja clan. However, his world is destroyed when Shirai Ryu’s sworn enemies the Lin Kuei, led by Sub-Zero, massacre Hasashi’s village before killing both of them. Hasashi soon finds himself in a new plane of existence known as the NetherRealm, where he is given an opportunity by the sorcerer Quan Chi – to enter the upcoming celestial martial arts tournament known as Mortal Kombat and steal a key that can free Quan Chi’s master Shinnok, in exchange for the chance to take his vengeance on Sub-Zero, one of the tournament’s competitors, along with resurrecting his wife and son. Hasashi agrees, and arrives just as the opening ceremony of Mortal Kombat begins. Little does Hasashi suspect that the fate of Earthrealm hangs in the balance. Should the forces of Outworld, led by Shang Tsung, win their tenth consecutive victory in Mortal Kombat, Earth will fall into their hands, with only the Thunder God Raiden and his chosen warriors Liu Kang, Sonya Blade, and Johnny Cage standing in their way. Action If there’s anyone who thought an animated “ Mortal Kombat ” couldn’t deliver the goods on the unapologetically gruesome action and off-the-chain fatalities that the series is famous (and upon its original debut, infamous) for, they’re in for a rude awakening with “Scorpion’s Revenge”. If anything, the animation team has so perfectly encapsulated the essence of the movie’s namesake that there are moments that are genuinely hard to watch here, from Jax’s loss of his human arms to two-thirds of the instances of Scorpion deploying his spear. Speak of the devil, with Scorpion being one of the signature characters of “Mortal Kombat”, moving him into the spotlight gives the movie a fresh feel, even if it at times seems to forget that while drifting back into being an ensemble. The movie also absolutely nails the trio of Liu Kang, Sonya Blade, and Johnny Cage, with the latter being relentlessly cocky even by his own egotistical standards, though Kitana is sadly underutilized. Once everything arrives on the island, the movie settles into a non-stop barrage of martial arts showdowns and one-liners, and with that comes both its greatest strength and its Achilles’ heel. From the halfway point on, “Scorpion’s Revenge” is almost nothing but action, and it certainly delivers with gory fatalities and each character’s signature moves from the games. The battles are also intercut with X-rays of the internal damage being inflicted, directly carrying over the X-rays incorporated into modern “Mortal Kombat” titles. The movie also has some fun in holding off on Johnny Cage’s genuine fighting prowess by having him bumbling around mistaking the whole tournament for a reality show, surviving largely by luck (and taking multiple disgruntled kicks to the crotch from Sonya Blade) before fully leaping into action in a truly satisfying coup. The film also dials back Liu Kang’s usual physical omnipotence a bit while adding a new shade to his character with his desire to prove himself to Raiden driving him just as much as his determination to save Earthrealm. Where “Scorpion’s Revenge” stumbles, ultimately, is the fact that it’s largely following the normal tournament-based template of the franchise and its characters while not injecting all that much in terms of new material beyond the shifting focus to Scorpion. Still, this very added element pays off splendidly in the climax, with Scorpion, having largely been disinterested in the battle of the realms unfolding around him, then finally picking a side and unleashing all hell as only he can. Summary “Scorpion’s Revenge” doesn’t reinvent the wheel of the “Mortal Kombat” canon, but it does give fans of the franchise everything they demand while the plot gives Scorpion a rare opportunity to step into the driver’s seat. The movie hits the bull’s eye on virtually every one of the series’ beloved kombatants, with Johnny Cage in particular being even more of a motor-mouthed know-it-all than normal, while the action scenes are both relentlessly frequent and relentlessly ferocious. For anyone looking for 80-minutes of over-the-top, supernaturally-powered butt-kicking, “Scorpion’s Revenge” entertains with unparalleled vengeance! Trivia Patrick Seitz and Steve Blum have previously provided the voices of Scorpion and Sub-Zero in other installments of the franchise, while Kevin Michael Richardson previously voiced Goro in the 1995 “Mortal Kombat” movie. Grey Griffin previously turned down voicing Kitana in “Mortal Kombat X” due to being pregnant at the time. Griffin is also well known for voicing Azula on “ Avatar: The Last Airbender “. This is the first “Mortal Kombat” movie, either animated or live-action, to receive an R-rating. 2021’s “Mortal Kombat” is also set to be rated ‘R’. Sonya Blade jokingly refers to Liu Kang as Bruce Lee in the movie. This isn’t too far off the mark, as Liu Kang was specifically modeled on Bruce Lee. This can clearly be seen (and heard) with the sounds Kang makes when fighting, being identical to Bruce’s. Favourite Quotes “See the scorpion? No matter how many enemies, it continues on. It is strong, yes. It is fast. But do you know why the scorpion is feared? Its will. Willpower is what makes your destiny your own. Learn to be strong here [head] and here [heart]. Promise me you’ll remember that. ” – Scorpion (explaining the nature of scorpions to his son, Satoshi. ) “Johnny Cage of the superstar variety. But you probably knew that. ” – J ohnny Cage (introducing himself to Liu Kang. ) “F*** with a Blade, you’re gonna get cut. ” – Sonya Blade “My will is strong. Mortal Kombat is a staple in the video game community. The hit game from Midway Games first started attracting players back in 1992, even causing quite a stir due to its gruesome finishing moves, which eventually led to the implementation of the ESRB rating system for video games. Since then, it's continued to cultivate an incredible fanbase that grows year after year. It's even been adapted a number of times as well, with a live-action reboot set to hit the big screen next year. After Midway Games went bankrupt in 2009, the franchise was then acquired by Warner Bros. Entertainment. Following this acquisition, Warner Bros. Animation set out to make their own feature based on the property, and they knocked it out of the park. Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion's Revenge relishes in its source material and gruesome fatalities, going all-in for an entertaining thrill ride. The film opens with Hanzo Hasashi (voiced by Patrick Seitz) teaching his son Satoshi (Grey Griffin) about the ways of the scorpion. On their way back to their village, they find it's been ambushed by the Lin Kuei clan, with Sub-Zero (Steve Blum) leading the charge. After discovering his wife died in the massacre, along with his young son not long after, Hanzo takes on Sub-Zero in a gruesome battle that, unfortunately, ends in bloodshed for the former. However, Hanzo is miraculously resurrected in the Netherrealm by a sorcerer named Quan Chi (Darin De Paul), who explains to him he can enact his revenge on Sub-Zero by fighting for him in the 10th annual Mortal Kombat tournament. He agrees to the deal and takes on a new identity in the process to honor his son: Scorpion. On the Earthrealm, a number of fighters are also prepping for the tournament, but mainly to help defend their realm rather than reaching for glory. Raiden (Dave B. Mitchell) and Liu Kang (Jordan Rodrigues) lead the motley crew of fighters that set out to compete, including newcomers Sonya Blade (Jennifer Carpenter) and an eccentric actor named Johnny Cage (Joel McHale). Although some of them are participating for different reasons -- Sonya to track down Black Dragon's leader Kano (Robin Atkin Downes) and Johnny just believes he's heading to a movie set -- they're all forced to come together in the end to protect the world they call home. It's evident that director Ethan Spaulding is a massive fan of the franchise, as there's plenty of classic Mortal Kombat one-liners to go around and the fatalities are played up to maximum effect. In regard to the latter, the movie truly holds nothing back when it comes to gore. From skulls and spines ripped straight through heads to arms being ripped out of sockets, the fatalities are sure to satisfy every Mortal Kombat fan. Literally, "Finish him! " holds just as much promise as it does in the games. It's clear the animators went all-in on the action and effects, showing each finishing move in excruciating detail, accompanied by plenty of snaps and cracks to give viewers the full experience. Mortal Kombat Legends also captures the world of the original video game exceptionally well while still finding subtle ways to stand out. Even the character designs are unique, with each voice actor bringing an abundance of charisma and energy to their respective roles to make for excellent performances. McHale and Carpenter, in particular, have some of the greatest interactions. Sonya's bold and tough-as-nails attitude contrasts well with Johnny's self-absorbed, yet charmingly goofy, personality. Even McHale finds clever ways to slip in cheeky one-liners ( "This better not go straight to video! ") that bring his own personal comedic flair to Johnny's character. Despite a slow beginning that skips around to introduce all of its main players, the movie has great pacing once it gets going. It keeps viewers on their toes with plenty of action sequences, fight scenes, and a solid story. Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion's Revenge is an excellent debut for Warner Bros. Animation's Mortal Kombat movies, taking all of the aspects that fans love most about the franchise and executing them with style. It's a solid start that proves the company knows what they're doing with the property, and hopefully, they have more thrilling installments in store. It is the first Mortal Kombat based property to be produced at Warner Bros. Animation after its parent company acquired the franchise in 2009 from Midway Games, and the first Mortal Kombat animated project since the 1996 animated series Mortal Kombat: Defenders of the Realm, featuring co-creator Ed Boon involved as creative consultant. [1] The film centers around the titular character seeking his revenge on those who murdered his family and clan after being resurrected by Quan Chi, while Liu Kang, Sonya Blade and Johnny Cage are chosen to participate on the Mortal Kombat tournament for the fate of Earthrealm. The film was released on April 14, 2020 on digital, and was followed on April 28, 2020 as 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray releases. [2] Plot [ edit] In Japan, Shirai Ryu Grandmaster Hanzo Hasashi and his young son Satoshi are ambushed on their way home by several ninjas from the rival Lin Kuei clan. Hanzo kills them all after discovering that the Lin Kuei have slaughtered the rest of the Shirai Ryu, including his wife Harumi. The Lin Kuei's Grandmaster Sub-Zero appears, uses his freezing abilities to restrain Hanzo in ice and then murders Satoshi. He then impales Hanzo through the neck with an icicle, killing him. Deep below in the depths of the Netherrealm, Hanzo is mysteriously resurrected and meets with the sorcerer Quan Chi, who persuades Hanzo to fight for him in the tournament so that he can exact his revenge on Sub-Zero. Hanzo agrees, dubbing himself Scorpion. Meanwhile, the thunder god Raiden and the Shaolin monk Liu Kang make preparations to defend Earthrealm by participating in the Mortal Kombat tournament, hosted by the aging warlock Shang Tsung. The tournament's victor will battle Tsung to decide the fate of Earthrealm. The pair are accompanied by Special Forces agent Sonya Blade and Hollywood actor Johnny Cage, with both having their own reasons for participating: Sonya is in pursuit of Black Dragon crime syndicate leader Kano, and Johnny believes that he is participating in a film project. Upon arrival on Shang Tsung's island, Scorpion attempts to steal Shinnok 's amulet on Quan Chi's orders, but is persuaded by Raiden to not follow through on his deal. Meanwhile, Liu, Sonya, and Johnny witness Sonya's partner Jackson "Jax" Briggs being grievously injured by Goro until Raiden intervenes. During the course of the tournament, Johnny barely claims victory over Baraka, Sonya successfully kills Reptile, and Liu successfully wins after Kitana yields. In an attempt to stop the Earthrealm heroes, Kano has his assassins infiltrate the island to kill them, but they are all killed by Scorpion. While attempting to fight Kano, Sub-Zero appears and helps deal with the assassins, but is killed when Scorpion tackles him off a bridge into a spike pit, while Johnny and Sonya pursue Kano in order to rescue Jax. Quan Chi reveals to Scorpion that he was directly responsible for the slaughter of his clan and manipulated the Lin Kuei to do his bidding, and that Sub-Zero was not actually involved in the atrocity. Enraged, Scorpion removes himself from the spike to exact revenge. At the climax of the tournament, Liu almost suffers the same fate as Jax during his match against Goro, but is saved when Scorpion decapitates Goro, while Johnny, Sonya and Jax successfully kill Kano. Shang Tsung attempts to have Scorpion fight Liu Kang, but Scorpion opts to take Shang Tsung hostage and willingly forfeits his status as a fighter, securing Liu's position as the victor of the tournament. After Shang Tsung retreats to Outworld, the island begins to collapse, with the Earthrealm heroes evacuating to a nearby boat, while Scorpion succeeds in killing Quan Chi in combat before joining his clan in the afterlife. In the aftermath, Shang Tsung is tortured by Shao Kahn for his failure before being ordered to make preparations for the invasion of Earthrealm.
