Sam Yoon
Since 2021, Sam Yoon has served as the Chief of the Division of Surgical Oncology and Vice-Chair of Surgical Oncology Research and Education at Columbia University Irving Medical Center. He is an authority in sarcomas, stomach, gastroesophageal junction cancers, and gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs), leading critical clinical trials and delivering key lectures at worldwide medical conferences. His expertise is vital in addressing gastric cancer, which annually results in over one million new cases and 750,000 deaths globally. Renowned for his dedication to patient-centric care, he draws patients from all over the tri-state area, earning him recognition as one of the Best Doctors in America in 2010-2011 and from 2017 to 2020. His practices are at the CUIMC/Herbert Irving Pavilion in New York City, with additional offices in Bronxville, Cortland Manor in New York, and Englewood, New Jersey. He completed his undergraduate education at Harvard University and his medical degree from the University of California, San Diego. He completed his general surgery residency at Massachusetts General Hospital and a surgical oncology fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, one of the foremost Comprehensive Cancer Centers recognized by the National Cancer Institute. Before his current role, Yoon was an attending surgeon in the Division of Gastric and Mixed Tumors at Memorial Sloan Kettering. He was a professor at Weill Cornell Medical College. He also held an associate professorship at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School before transitioning to his latest positions in 2012. He is at the forefront of minimally invasive robotic surgery, having performed over 300 such procedures, including robotic gastrectomies. This method uses advanced robotic technology to conduct surgeries through smaller incisions, enhancing precision and reducing recovery times. His scholarly work includes over 150 published research articles, book chapters, and reviews. Additionally, he is involved in significant research projects funded by organizations like Stand Up To Cancer and the DeGregorio Family Foundation for Gastric and Esophageal Cancer Research, which are dedicated to developing early diagnostic tests and new treatment methodologies.
