Derrick Weston Brown holds an MFA in Creative Writing from American University. He has studied poetry under Dr. Tony Medina at Howard University and Cornelius Eady at American University. He is a graduate of the Cave Canem Summer workshop for black poets. He’s also participated in The Squaw Valley Writer’s Workshop and VONA workshops. His work has appeared in such literary journals as Warpland and DrumVoices, and the online journals Capital Beltway and Howard University’s Amistad, LocusPoint, and Mipoesias. His work has also appeared in The Washington Post and New Orleans Times-Picayune newpapers and the anthologies, When Words Become Flesh ( Mwaza Publications), Taboo Haiku ( Avisson Press),Gathering Ground: A Reader Celebrating Cave Canem’s First Decade (University Of Michigan Press) and The Columbia Poetry Review. In 2006 he released his first chapbook of poetry entitled The Unscene and is currently shopping his full length poetry manuscript Wisdom Teeth, which recently was a finalist for The 2009 Naomi Long Madgett Poetry Prize. He also appears in Haiku: The Art of the Short Poem. A Film, by Tazuo Yamaguchi and the included anthology of the same name. He has performed his poetry at venues such as Bar 13, The Bowery Poetry Club, The Studio Museum Of Harlem, The Smithsonian Museum Of Natural History, The Honfluer Gallery, and other amazing spaces around the country. As the first Poet-In-Residence at Busboys and Poets bookstore and restaurant is the founder and curator of The Nine On The Ninth, four and a half year old monthly poetry series and helps coordinate the poetry programming at the 14th & Vst location. He is a Native Of Charlotte North Carolina and resides in Mount Rainier, Maryland.
