In a lovely, if burned-over, canyon leading to the Snake River in Eastern Washington USA

I grew up in Tennessee, with college in Mississippi and graduate work for my Ph.D. at the University of Miami. I met my husband, David, in Wods Hole MA, and the tow of us completed our degrees at the University of Miami and went to Duke University for graduate training. After that, we had careers teaching Physiology at Washington State University and raising a family of three children in the Pacific Northwest. Before they were launched in their own careers, we began to pioneer grape-growing and wine production in a part of the world where cattle ranching and mega-agriculture reign. We fell into this almost by accident, just looking for a place where we could have a big garden, and pursued it while we were still teaching at the local college (WSU). OUr second son, Ben turned out to be a talented wine maker, and we have largely turned the business over to him. Now David and I are retired and dividing our time between a semi-self-sufficiency existence, the wine production from our own grapes, and writing. Never enough time!
