I've been involved in voluntary work in Handsworth in Birmingham over many years. My choice of travel is bicycle and public transport. My non-academic publications include evidence submitted in 1998 by the Handsworth Allotments Information Group, which I started, to the sub-committee on ‘The Future for Allotments’ and a history of my local park. My memorandum on behalf of The Handsworth Park Association, which I helped found in 1994, is published as evidence to the Environment Sub-committee on ‘Town and Country Parks’. I've featured in BBC documentaries about urban green space – ‘Private Investigations’ in Nov 1999 and ‘Losing the Plot’ for Midlands Report in Jan 2000. Currently I'm Hon. Sec. of a small voluntary group - Handsworth Helping Hands - owning a white van equipped with basic hand tools doing street cleaning, waste disposal, garden work and other errands for vulnerable people in Handsworth. I work an allotment - or try to. I am occasional caretaker and mentor for two grandchildren and live part of the year in Ano Korakiana, on Corfu in Greece.
