April to October my husband Doug and I live on a historic homestead, called Campbell's Ferry, surrounded by 2.4 million acres of the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness. Situated on a bank above the Salmon River in Idaho, the homestead was first settled in 1897 and life there has changed very little since that time. In a previous life I was a professional dancer for many years before becoming a university professor and administrator, retiring in 2005. Since that time Doug and I have devoted ourselves to saving this piece of Idaho history, maintaining the property and its way of life. After seven years of research we published a book, Merciless Eden, chronicling the its legacy and our efforts to live there much as the first settlers did.
