I was born in Bethesda, Maryland, but, I 'grew up' in Baltimore, Maryland while studying Painting and Creative Writing at The Maryland Institute College of Art. I graduated in 1976. I consider myself to be a "Baltimore School" Poet. This 'unofficial' school owes it's birth to the efforts of Poet/Professor Joe Cardarelli to bring well known poets such as Ted Berrigan; Ed Dorn; Robert Creeley and others to town. Also in Baltimore at the time were Anselm Hollo and Andrei Codrescu. It was an exciting time and one of those experiences that come around once (if ever) in a lifetime! The hallmark of this 'School' are a concern for language that is ordinary, but, highly expressive; a poetry (and poetics) that is found In Situ, that is to say, in the everyday; to be humorously philosophic and to be alive in the moment. My poetry derives from sources as varied as Baudelaire, Rimbaud, Mallarme to The Dada's and The Black Mountain Poets. I through in a dash of Ted Berrigan; Patti Smith and Lou Reed just for a bit of spice. Visually I feel the impact of the Abstract Expressionists and the Post Impressionists has formed my painting style. Other activities include Fly fishing; Kayaking; Bird watching; Food; Wine and having good times with friends.
