Susan Roy

New York City

A former magazine editor, Susan Roy, emerged from the bunkers of publishing and in 2010 earned an M.A. in architectural history at Columbia University. Her new book, "Bomboozled: How the U.S. Government Misled Itself and Its People into Believing They Could Survive a Nuclear Attack," grew out of research for her master's thesis, the family fallout shelter during the Cold War. She is interested in the security state, propaganda, "security theater" and all things atomic. During her research, she was stunned to discover that the film "Dr. Strangelove" was only a mild exaggeration of actual nuclear deterrence theory created by the Rand Corporation during the 1950s.
