Eve Dobler-Drew candidate for San Luis Coastal School Board 2020

As a bilingual teacher in Title I schools for 25 years, I actively promoted literacy, education, and counseling services for low-income and multicultural families. I acted as educational liaison to inform families of community services that could enhance their lives, such as free family counseling, how to join the public library system, or how to take the pathway to citizenship. I taught remedial reading and other topics in the after-school programs. In my teaching career I served the needs of hundreds of multicultural families, from a variety of cultures, but mostly Mexican-American, speaking in Spanish when needed to conduct parent conferences and often instructing with small student groups in Spanish until the state mandated an end to individual bilingual classrooms. (I agree that the students need to be immersed in English at school, as they are speaking Spanish at home.) Now, during this current period of crisis, I have felt the urge to do more to serve my community. This year 2020 has brought unprecedented change and challenges, and my background of experience with many families with great economic and language challenges has equipped me with a sensitivity to different lifestyles and races. The San Luis Coastal School Board has pledged to do more to make amends between economic disparities and to be inclusive of all races and cultures, and I can offer my support and guidance as I work with them to accomplish that worthy goal. I look forward to serving on the School Board.
