Graduate of Wilson College (PA, USA) and Harvard Grad. Schools (MTS,1975;MA, 1979, Comparative Religion), I have lived in Japan with my family since 1985. A Cold-War 'drop-out' from news media, I spent most of each day reading books about World Religions. I had taken an appreciative attitude towards so-called 'idols' ever since learning of the Scandinavian Gods Whom English and French days of the week are named for--in kindergarten. Thirteen years of formal study in this field left me convinced "those who know do not speak" [Katha Upanishad]. Teaching seemed impossible and child-bearing, imperative [after my cute niece was shown me]. My adored teacher had insulted Chicago's mayor by moving the American Academy of Religion conference away from that scene of suppression of protesters. This must have meant more than our letter to President Nixon pleading against invading Cambodia or our carrying paper-mache' skulls to our graduation ceremony that happened to include an honorary degree for former First Lady Eisenhower [June, 1970]. My name appeared as part-time copy-editor under the "Guru"-like Dr. Buck in the JAAR. Anyway fear of special prosecution of all pacificists led me to be scrupulous about law-abiding. A huge goof writing to the NYTimes about Fr. Berrigan led eventually to a 40-year sojourn in the RC Church. A habit of silent listening and heedless neglect of PR for self led to painful misunderstandings. Despite my personal name, I may be half-Japanese and scarcely anymore "Christian". Attempting to share in the proverb "Aging, we imitate our child[ren]", I do not plan to go back. (老いて子どもに習う[?])
